Diablo Canyon: Former Inspector Says It’s Time to Shut It Down

Hosted by

SoCal Edison has shut down San Onofre in Orange County, leaving California with just one remaining nuclear power plant: Diablo Canyon, on the rugged coast near San Luis Obispo. After an earthquake fault was discovered during construction 30 years ago, retro-fitting got underway on two giant reactors. But it had to be started over again because it was being done backwards. Environmentalists aren’t the only ones who have questioned Diablo Canyon’s ability to withstand a big earthquake ever since. Now Michael Peck, the lead on-site inspector for five years, has filed a confidential report saying nobody knows if it’s safe or not. Michael Blood of the Associated Press obtained the report and broke the story.
