Are you an LA city resident?

From Ballotpedia: The city of Los Angeles, California, will hold primary elections for mayor, eight city council seats, city attorney, and city controller on March 7, 2017. Any race where no candidate earns a majority (50 percent plus one) of the primary votes cast will advance to a general election on May 16, 2017.

Local Ballot measures

Local municipalities are facing a handful of ballot measures. Los Angeles (the city) has four. Measure M and Measure N have to do with taxing and permitting legal pot. Measure P seeks to extend Harbor leases. And Measure S, the most high-profile of the three, puts a moratorium on developments that require a zoning variance.

Dive into Measure S:

From KCRW’s DNA:  If you live in LA, you are no doubt being deluged with flyers for and against Measure S, and you will have seen many billboards promising to “save our neighborhoods.” This initiative aims to put a two-year moratorium on developments that require a zoning change or variance from the General Plan. Find out what Measure S really means for LA.

Press Play digs into what the pro and con sides are saying and how real people, struggling with a challenging housing market, might be affected.

Mayoral race:

LA Mayor Eric Garcetti is up for re-election. He needs to get over 50 percent of the vote in order to avoid a runoff in May.

LA Observed Kevin Roderick says he’s likely to win without a runoff, but he still has his critics. More at LA Observed.

LA County

School Board:

Los Angeles Times education reporter, Howard Blume tells KCRW: “What‘s at stake here is possible control of school majority between candidates who are supported by the teacher’s union and candidates who are supported by charter school forces.”

Measure H:

Measure H is a county measure to raise the sales tax by 1/4 cent to fund services for the homeless. More on what Measure H does.
