The City of Compton: On the Streets and on Film

The album Straight Outta Compton created both a cultural style that spread nationwide and a notorious image for the Southern California City. Now rap artists Dr. Dre and Ice Cube are making a film depicting the Compton of 25 years ago — as the current, 31-year-old Mayor tries to shake off that image. Also, a dispute in the deputies' union could influence this year's election for Sheriff of LA County, and a shortage of limes means trouble for Mexican farmers and Mexican food in Southern California.

Image-for-WWLA.jpgLater, on To the Point, deadly childhood diseases once thought eradicated are making a comeback around the world.  In some places, it's polio, where violence, religion and political paranoia have caused a drop in vaccinations.  In the US, it's measles, where some parents have chosen not to vaccinate their children. We look at the reasons, the consequences and what might be done in the interests of public health.
