While Governor Gray Davis may be unpopular with California voters, even Republicans have been giving up on challenger Bill Simon-s campaign. Today, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge James Chalfant gave Simon-s campaign what could be a major boost, when he overturned the verdict of fraud against Simon-s company and rescinded a $ 78 million judgment. The verdict has been a prominent feature of television attack ads run by incumbent Democratic Governor Gray Davis. Will the judgment give Simon a second chance? We hear very different answers from senior consultants to the Simon and Davis campaigns, and strategists for former Mayor Richard Riordan and President Clinton.
