Dawson City: Frozen Time

The Document Partner Screening

UCLA Center for the Art of Performance will screen Bill Morrison’s “Dawson City: Frozen Time” – a fever dream of a documentary comprised largely of a collage of the films that were discovered during a construction project in 1978. It’s a rare opportunity to see the film projected on the big screen with the gorgeous score by Alex Somers performed live by the experiment classical ensemble Wild Up. It all happens at the Theater at Ace Hotel – one of the movie palaces where some of the lost films might have originally screened.

About the Film

Dawson City was a Klondike gold-mining town. It was also the last stop for movie reels as they traveled from theater to theater across the continent.

Hollywood didn’t want the reels back, so they were dumped in the Yukon River or tossed into the town’s empty pool when it was filled in to make a hockey rink. Decades later, many of them emerged from the permafrost where they’d been buried and forgotten.

RSVP with your KCRW member number to attend! Note: These are very valuable seats. Please do not RSVP if you are not certain you can attend.
