The REDCAT Theater

This week, the last component of Walt Disney Concert Hall opens. The REDCAT Theatre, to be run by Cal-Arts, will focus on new, experimental and multimedia performances. Theatre critic James Taylor discovers what to expect from Steven Lavine of CalArts, REDCAT Executive Director Mark Murphy, music critic Shirley Apthorp and David Mermelstein of the New York Times.

Steven Lavine is president of CalArts, the California Institute of the Arts, in Valencia and the -imagineer- behind the concept and creation of Redcat.

Mark Murphy, executive director of the Redcat Theater has been on the job here for two years. Previously, he headed On the Boards, Seattle-s -alternative- space, and opened their new theatre.

Berlin-based Shirley Apthorp is a music critic for the Financial Times, covering culture throughout Europe.

David Mermelstein writes about Los Angeles for the New York Times.
