From shorts to features, fiction films to documentaries, directing to acting, Werner Herzog (Fitzcarraldo, Aguirre, The Wrath of God, Grizzly Man, Rescue Dawn) has completely immersed himself in film. His newest is his take on Bad Lieutenant. He talks about his own approach to film and life.

Herzog explains why this is not a remake of Abel Ferrara's Bad Lieutenant, bringing his film in early and under budget; the long-time mutual admiration between him and Nic Cage, with whom he'd never worked until now, casting animals, overly academic film schools, the challenges of making Fitzcarraldo, being shot by an air rifle during a BBC interview, his love of opera and American football.
