Best Coast: Fade Away EP

The latest from Best Coast is a winner, sending the listener home happy with a catchy tune stuck in their head.

Buzz-worthy LA-based duo Best Coast return with a new release that is something between a full album and an EP, and appropriately, the record splits the difference between the two poles of their established sound: fuzzy garage rock & 60s-flavored girl-pop. But no matter which side they lean towards, the grace of simplicity rules over all.

Frontwoman Bethany Cosentino, serving as a one-woman version of the Shangri-Las, sings her tales of unreliable lovers while secret weapon Bibb Bruno chugs along in the back. They don't vere much from the formula, but it is a formula that works, culminating in the record's crowning moment, the concluding track, "I Don't Know How," which begins with Cosentino singing at her sweetest with a Patsy Cline-like twang, before kicking into a double-time rocker that finally winds down at the end from the sheer exhaustion of not knowing how. It's a winner, sending the listener home happy with a catchy tune stuck in their head.
