A Celebration of 30 Years of Morning Becomes Eclectic

A Celebration of 30 Years of Morning Becomes Eclectic

Morning Becomes Eclectic operates on the principle described by Chris Douridas, the second of the show’s three hosts over the last three decades. “The show lives and breathes based on what’s being released across the world. My philosophy is, if you love it, play it. If you play something you love, chances are other people will love it, too."

Morning Becomes Eclectic stood apart as a new kind of music program from the day it was launched, breaking down the traditional barriers between pop, jazz, rock and classical. Originally hosted by Tom Schnabel, then Douridas, MBE is now under the helm of current host Nic Harcourt, who relentlessly exposes new talent to the show’s dedicated audience.

All three hosts will produce three-hour specials of live performances and choice master recordings that define their musical journey. The all-day special will be broadcast live on air and streamed live on KCRW.com from 9am to 6 pm, repeated 6pm to 3am. The hosts will feature the artists whose lives they changed and the artists whose music changed them including; David Bowie, Little Richard, Willie Nelson, Dido, Burt Bacharach, Fela Kuti, Gillian Welch, and the Flaming Lips.

KCRW.com will have a number of special features on the website in addition to the online stream, including a photo slideshow, host interviews by longtime KCRW friend and actress/comedian Tracey Ullman, and full versions of selected interviews and performances featured in the specials. The entire special series will be archived for on-demand listening on September 4.

Chris Douridas

Chris was KCRW's second music director and host of Morning Becomes Eclectic in the nineties. Today, Douridas delivers his impeccable taste each Saturday on New Ground (and weekdays with 5 new original shows for KCRW's Music Channel), but you may be surprised to learn he is also the man behind the music on some of the coolest movies. From Austin Powers to American Beauty, from Grosse Point Blank to Shrek 2, Chris makes eclectic music global.

Tom Schnabel

Cesaria Evora, Buena Vista Social Club, Ravi Shankar, Caetano Veloso, Bebel Gilberto…regular fixtures on the KCRW playlists, but world music didn’t used to have a home on radio in the U.S. That is, until Tom Schnabel started Morning Becomes Eclectic as KCRW’s first music director in the ‘80’s, and made it his mission to expand LA’s horizons. He continues to do so as the program advisor for the Hollywood Bowl and Walt Disney Hall.
