King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard: Paper Mâché Dream Balloon

Sounding like a cross between Jethro Tull and the Flaming Lips on the set of the mid-70s kids show The Wombles, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard are authentic miners of retro gold, while never resorting to camp. Say you were the monarch of avian stomachs and your best friend was a reptilian warlock. What more logical thing to do than to start an awesome band! Australian group King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard have taken this allegory to heart and prolifically made some of the most charming garage rock of the past five years, the latest of which is Paper Mâché Dream Balloon, their seventh album.

Always up for a challenge, band leader (and flutist) Stu Mackenzie and his merry band of musical pranksters have opted to make this new album an all-acoustic affair, giving a more pastoral feel to the proceedings. From the opening track, "Sense," and its clarinet-driven groove, to the album's gently-psychedelic instrumental closer, "Paper Mâché," there are gems galore to appreciate.
