Guest Interview Why the LA Unified School District Banned Styrofoam Lunch Trays 8 MIN, 15 SEC

Good Food producer Gillian Ferguson visits Thomas Starr King Middle School on the border of Silver Lake and Los Feliz. She talks to Brian Miller who manages "Farm King," the school garden. In 2010 Miller taught his 6th graders about the effects of their Styrofoam lunch trays on the environment. The 6th graders built a 30-foot-tall Styrofoam lunch tray sculpture in the school garden to raise awareness of the 1,400 Styrofoam lunch trays that the school throws away each day. Thanks to their activism the LAUSD announced a ban on all Styrofoam lunch trays earlier this fall.

Jonathan Gold proclaims there is a new dumpling fad in town at Emperor Noodle in the San Gabriel Valley. He declares that the shen jian bao or "sjb" served at Emperor Noodle have replaced xiao long bao or "xlb" as the trendiest dumpling in Los Angeles. While the sjb are the star of the show, he also recommends the Shanghai fried rice cakes, the spicy pork noodles

Al Courchesne owns Frog Hollow Farms in Brentwood, California (not Brentwood, Los Angeles). His legendary Warren pears are back in season and he promises to have them at the Wednesday Santa Monica Farmers' Market through Christmas. The pears are prized for the sweetness and luscious texture.
