One way to take the measure of a culture is to keep track of what people are naming their newborn children. The usual names – your Robs and your Marys – probably stay pretty constant in the list of most popular names. But at the edges, shooting up to number one for a year or two, or sliding down to the bottom – I’m thinking here of all of the poor Adolfs – that’s where you learn something from the names graph...
