Last week, the Council of American-Islamic Relations released a report stating hate incidents against Muslims increased 58% in California in 2015, with Orange County leading the way with 363, a 68% increase from 2014. OC has one of the largest enclaves of Muslim immigrants in the nation, centered around wealthy Irvine and a working-class Anaheim neighborhood called Little Arabia. In recent years, Syrian refugees and Turkish immigrants have also flocked to OC. Community groups have labored long to make outreach with other groups, frequently opening their mosques to anyone interested and even leading food tours. But in an election year where rhetoric against Muslims have increased, are these efforts enough?
