FROM THIS EPISODE

In the wake of the shootings of police officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge, Donald Trump has been calling himself “the law and order candidate.” The roots of that slogan reach back to Barry Goldwater and Richard Nixon in the 1960s. Melania Trump will be the headline speaker Monday at the Republican Convention in Cleveland. Trump has had problems courting women voters. Conservative women at the Republican National Convention share their feelings about Trump. New York Magazine is reporting that Roger Ailes, the man who turned Fox News into a powerhouse, is on his way out as its leader. Really? If so, what’s next for America’s favorite conservative news outlet? Documentary filmmaker Joe Berlinger and self-help guru Tony Robbins talk about Tony Robbins: I am Not Your Guru. Finally, after 14 years of work, writer and artist Dennis Cooper’s Google-managed blog has suddenly disappeared completely: like it never existed. Google has given no explanation.

Trump, the ‘law and order’ candidate 6 MIN, 47 SEC

In the wake of the shootings of police officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge, Donald Trump has been calling himself “the law and order candidate.” We discuss the roots of that slogan from Barry Goldwater and Richard Nixon in the 1960s. Will that be a successful tactic for the Republican nominee? And what will it mean for the recent bipartisan push for criminal justice reform?

Trump and conservative women 10 MIN, 13 SEC

Melania Trump will be the headline speaker Monday at the Republican Convention in Cleveland. Her husband, Donald Trump has had problems courting women voters. A Washington Post poll last month found that more than three quarters of women voters had an unfavorable opinion of him. And his choice of Indiana governor Mike Pence as a running mate may not be helping much. Pence has signed some of the most stringent restrictions on abortion access in the nation. As a congressman, Pence tried to shut down the government over Planned Parenthood funding. Well, on day one of the Republican National Convention, we wanted to hear from some conservative women about how they feel about their candidates’ positions on women’s issues.

New documentary looks at guru Tony Robbins 13 MIN, 48 SEC

Joe Berlinger is an Oscar-nominated documentarian known for hard-hitting films like Paradise Lost, Brother’s Keeper and Crude. But his new film is more personal. It’s called Tony Robbins: I am Not Your Guru. It’s like a concert film, except instead of a rock band’s stadium show, it goes inside the self-help author’s 6-day seminar called "Date With Destiny." Joe Berlinger decided to make the film after Tony Robbins invited him to attend a “Date with Destiny” seminar in 2014. Berlinger talks about his personal experience with Robbins.

Dennis Cooper and the case of the disappearing blog 7 MIN, 34 SEC

What would you do if 14 years’ worth of your work disappeared? That’s a question that writer and artist Dennis Cooper has been asking himself for the last few weeks. At the end of June, Cooper tried to log in to his Google-managed blog and it was gone: no content, no archives, no explanation. Cooper used the blog to save most of his work, for instance, he recently published a GIF novel (yes, a novel composed of GIFs) completely on the blog. And beyond using the blog as a primary publishing platform, he also used it to interact with fans and other writers on a daily basis.
