FROM THIS EPISODE

David Ryu was sworn in yesterday as LA's first Korean-American City Councilman and the only the second member of Asian descent.  Ryu defeated an establishment favorite, and raised high expectations among supporters with his promise to be an "outsider." We ask him how he can make good on that promise and still get anything done on a council known for unanimity among "insiders?"

Also, LA District Attorney Jackie Lacey takes on wrongful convictions.

New Wrongful Conviction Unit Unveiled at DA's Office 10 MIN, 45 SEC

Since the advent of DNA testing in the 1980's, US courts have come to recognize that wrongful convictions are all too common.  Some 1600 supposed criminals have been found innocent after all.  Now, prosecutorial offices around the country have been opening Wrongful Conviction Units.  The latest is the biggest of all — the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office — which prosecuted 71,000 felony defendants last year.  Jackie Lacey is the District Attorney.

Is a New Wind Blowing at LA City Hall? 11 MIN, 19 SEC

David Ryu was sworn in yesterday, one of two newly elected members of the Los Angeles City Council. He's the first Korean-American ever to serve and only the second member of Asian descent. He's recently been a hospital administrator and he styled himself as an "outsider" when he ran against City Hall veteran Carolyn Ramsay. His district includes Sherman Oaks, then stretches over the Hollywood Hills to Silver Lake, Hancock Park, the Miracle Mile and a small part of Koreatown. It's relatively affluent and engaged in local politics, and Ryu's claims to be an "outsider" have created high expectations that he will "shake things up.

Guests:
David Ryu, Los Angeles City Council (@davideryu )

More:
Bernard Parks on LA City Council, Ryu's predecessor, Tom LaBonge
