FROM THIS EPISODE

It used to be just your driver’s license, then your fingerprint. Now LA Sheriff’s deputies are prepared to record your picture, the shape of your eyeball and, possibly, the sound of your voice. It’s personal information—collected during a traffic stop or a booking and saved until you turn 75—even if you’re not charged. Why is there no public debate about the potential invasion of privacy of the most intimate kind?

Also, Obamacare and addiction: prayer is out; medicine is in.

LA Law Enforcement to Collect Biometric Data 18 MIN, 17 SEC

Without any public notice at all, Los Angeles County is taking bids for compiling America’s biggest repository of personal data outside what’s kept by the FBI. And it’s not just personal records, it’s personal characteristics—not only fingerprints, but palm prints, pictures and scans of the iris in your eye. Voice recordings could be next. There’s never been any public announcement. The project was discovered by the Center for Investigative Reporting in the Bay Area.

Obamacare and the Future of Rehab 7 MIN, 47 SEC

When it comes to alcohol and drug addiction, the private rehab industry is undergoing big changes. Self-help and spirituality are losing favor to science and medicine. Before Obamacare, one third of Americans had no coverage for treatment of substance abuse. KCRW Producer Evan George reports on what’s happening now.

Evan’s report is Part Two of a project for the California Endowment Health Journalism Fellowship, a program of USC’s Annenberg School for Journalism and Communication. You can read about it and listen to all our coverage at the WWLA? blog.
