The large hearing room at LA County's Hall of Administration is generally almost empty while the five supervisors conduct public business. Last night was a different story. With almost 1000 people signed up to speak, additional rooms were needed to accommodate the audience. The Supervisors rejected a move to redraw their district boundaries so a second Latino might have a better chance to serve. We hear about voting by race, color blindness and the careers of elected officials. On our rebroadcast of today's To the Point, Chris Christie, the man who didn't say "no."

LA Supervisors and Latino Voting Rights ()
After a long and passionate hearing last night, LA County Supervisors rejected a move to radically redraw their district boundaries by a vote of four to one. Gloria Molina and Mark Ridley-Thomas wanted to create a new, Latino-majority district, by drastically changing districts now held by Zev Yaroslavsky or Don Knabe respectively. Yaroslavsky and Knabe opposed both plans, along with Mike Antonovich and Don Knabe. But four votes were required, and Ridley-Thomas finally joined them to produce a majority for a plan by Knabe, which pretty much maintains the status quo. We hear from Ridley-Thomas, Knabe and others.

Last night at the Reagan Library in California, Chris Christie talked about America's greatness, disparaged both President Obama and Congress. Most Americans haven't heard much about the New Jersey Governor, but with Rick Perry becoming a joke for late-night comedians, Christie's being touted by influential Republicans and financial backers as the latest instant white knight. We hear how Christie, despite denials, is keeping the prospect alive.
