SOPA: How Is Piracy Affecting Angelenos?

The "creative communities" of LA and Orange County are losing jobs. Employment in arts and entertainment dropped by 11% between 2007 and 2010, and there's a ripple effect on all those supporting artists and entertainers — directly and indirectly — from technicians, writers, hairdressers and caterers to all the people they do business with. Many people in Hollywood blame Internet piracy, and they've made it a hot issue on Capitol Hill. We've sampled KCRW listeners who work in the industry through Facebook and the Public Insight Network.  We hear from them and others. On our rebroadcast of today's To the Point, is Newt Gingrich another flash in the pan?

SOPA: Internet Piracy and Hollywood Economics ()

Former US Senator Chris Dodd is now chair of the Motion Picture Association of America. The MPAA is sponsoring SOPA and PIPA, acronyms for measures in the Congress and Senate giving the Justice Department broad powers to battle Internet piracy. In reaction, Wikipedia shut down for a day and 10,000 lesser websites did, too. SOPA and PIPA are now off the table. We speak with Kim Masters, host of KCRW's The Business and editor-at-large for the Hollywood Reporter, then hear from rank and file Hollywood workers about how the Internet piracy legislation is impacting them.

Is Newt Gingrich Another Flash in the Pan? ()

Is Newt Gingrich Another Flash in the Pan?It's only January, and already the race for the Republican presidential nomination feels like it's gone on forever and that it might never end. Newt Gingrich clobbered Mitt Romney Saturday in South Carolina, and it turns out that Romney didn't really win Iowa after all. The Florida primary is just nine days away, with candidates raising the rhetorical volume before tonight's 18th debate in Tampa. There are four candidates left (Rick Santorum and Ron Paul are the other two) and no real front-runner. We get the latest.
