Construction Starts on Tallest Building in the West
Listen to/Watch entire show:
Will LA's Wilshire Grand Tower be the tallest building in the western United States? We won't know until the final spire is in place in 2017. Right now, the Wilshire Grand is a 100-foot hole in the ground. But Saturday, that will change dramatically when 2100 truckloads of cement are escorted to the site by the USC Marching Band.
Banner Image: Workers call it “The Hole.” It’s the construction pit where workers are building the concrete and rebar foundation for what will eventually become the 1,100 foot-tall Wilshire Grand Tower in downtown L.A. The darker space is the “footprint” for the tower. One challenge facing construction crews is building a skyscraper in the tight confines of downtown LA, where building material can’t be stored in the immediate vicinity and crews have to always be aware of not blocking traffic. Are More Indictments Against Sheriff Personnel on the Way? ()
Two more LA County Sheriff’s deputies face federal charges, this time for conspiring to assault a handcuffed jail inmate and covering up under oath. Witness Catholic chaplain Paulino Juarez testified about the incident before the Citizens Commission on Jail Violence. He repeated his remarks on video for the ACLU of Southern California.
Two of the deputies Juarez mentioned were indicted Friday, bringing to 20 the total number so far in that and other incidents. Will there be more to come? That may depend on evidence of who else knew what happened and failed to take action.
Downtown Los Angeles Looks to the Skies ()
One major feature of downtown LA is about to disappear this coming Saturday when the biggest hole in the ground will be filled with concrete. That’s the foundation for the Wilshire Ground project, and the cement pour is going to set a record. KCRW’s Saul Gonzalez has been there and he has a preview of what’s to come.
To get a sense of the scope of this project, you can see pictures of the biggest hole in Los Angeles—and drawings of the completed Wilshire Grand development at the Which Way, L.A.? Blog.
Which Way L.A.? is made possible in part by the Ralph M. Parsons Foundation and the Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Foundation.
