KCRW’s February Volunteer of the Month

Written by

Meet Jailyn! She started volunteering at KCRW during our Summer Marketing Internship in 2017 and stood out for her attentive customer service. She gave everyone that came to the street team table a welcoming smile and answered all questions. If we were short a volunteer, Jailyn would be eager to help out. She was selected as one of our Fall SMC Interns and grew at the Front Desk. Her interest in music has lead her to start training to be an in-studio production assistant. Jailyn is as wonderful as she is dependable and funny.

Jailyn, take it away…

Where did you grow up and do you have any siblings? Pets?

I grew up in Inglewood California as an only child up until 2 years ago when my baby brother was born. I have 1 dog. She’s a Maltese poodle mixed breed and her name is Jazzy!

What 5 things would you wish you had if you were stranded on a deserted island?

If I were stranded on a deserted island, the 5 things I’d want would be something to listen to music on, maybe a solar charged mp3 player with all my favorite albums, a million page coloring book with a million colored pencils, tools to gather food (obviously), and the Twilight books for entertainment lol.

What is your current occupation / what do you do outside of KCRW?

Right now I work at a movie theater scooping popcorn, selling movie tickets, the whole nine.

What is your fantasy occupation?

My fantasy occupation is to be a famous actress or director!

When did you first discover KCRW?

I first discovered KCRW through my art teacher when I was in high school about 3 years ago.

How did you find your way to our station for volunteering?

I found my way to the station by simply just googling how to get involved.

What’s your current volunteer position and how long have you been at it?

My current volunteer position is the front desk receptionist. I’ve been at it since the beginning of the Fall 2017 semester so maybe 4 or 5 months.

How has being a Santa Monica College student helped being involved with KCRW?

Being at SMC helps being involved with KCRW because it helps feel even more like a community. Knowing many other volunteers go to the same school and we all volunteer at the station on campus I feel brings us closer in the sense that we all have this huge thing in common.

Favorite volunteer moment?

My favorite volunteer moment was definitely meeting one of my favorite musicians, King Krule, after he performed on MBE. He’s so dreamy! I totally fangirled.

If you could get on the mic and say one sentence on the air, what would it be?

If I could say one sentence on air it would have to be something very “Jailyn,” to say so it’d probably be something childish like “I’m on air it’s lit, shout out to my mom!!!”

What song(s) have you hit repeat on lately?

Songs I’ve had on repeat would be “Just Like Heaven” by The Cure, “Get Free” by Major Lazer and “I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free” by Nina Simone.

Favorite book, movie?

I’m not sure I have a favorite book as bad as that sounds lol. Favorite movie would probably be Coraline.

Favorite thing to do outside the station?

My favorite thing to do outside the station would definitely be going to museums to see any and all kind of art.

What does KCRW mean to you?

To me, KCRW means community.

To us, you mean family! Thank you, Jailyn!
