KCRW’s July Volunteer of the Month

Written by

Meet Scott! He’s been a KCRW volunteer for over a year and we’re thrilled he’s here to help! He made a great impression at his first volunteering event and was offered a front desk shift. At the front desk, Scott is the best volunteer to have help you over the phone for his courtesy and patience. We’ve gotten so many emails or calls from members saying how wonderful Scott is. You can’t beat that! Get to know him a little better…

Where did you grow up and do you have any siblings? Pets?

I grew up on a strawberry farm in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada with one older brother and a horse named Silver Buzzer.

What 5 things would you wish you had if you were stranded on a deserted island?

My husband Michael
My dog Luka
A solar powered short-wave radio
Bottomless margaritas — to ward off scurvy of course!
All 7 volumes of ‘In Search Of Lost Time’ by Marcel Proust

What is your current occupation / what do you do outside of KCRW?

I’m the Music Coordinator at Lip Sync Music. We have a diverse roster of bands and solo artists whose music we pitch for placement in TV, film and commercials. I love discovering amazing new musical artists and aligning them with opportunities that will get their music heard.

What is your fantasy occupation?

Music Supervisor & KCRW DJ

When did you first discover KCRW?

While visiting LA in 2006, I rented a car with a friend to drive to the beach and the dial landed on Nic Harcourt hosting MBE. I was instantly hooked and after returning to Toronto I continued to listen online and eventually became a member.

How did you find your way to our station for volunteering?

Having listened to KCRW all those years in Toronto, when I finally moved to LA two years ago, I immediately contacted the station and began volunteering at various events.

What’s your current volunteer position and how long have you been at it?

I’ve been volunteering at the Front Desk/Reception for the past eight months.

Favorite volunteer moment?

Helping callers figure out what that mystery song was they heard on the air so they can rock out to it again.

If you could get on the mic and say one sentence on the air, what would it be?

“You’re listening to KCRW, I’m Scotty B sitting in for Chris Douridas.”

What song(s) have you hit repeat on lately?

Sneaks – Hair Slick Back
Gemini Rising – Best Case Life
Perfume Genius – Slip Away
Childish Gambino – Redbone
Gavin Turek – On The Line
Big Thief – Mythological Beauty
Gabriel Garzón-Montano – Fruitflies
Juana Molina – Lentísimo Halo
Kelly Lee Owens – Arthur
Ryuichi Sakamoto – ubi

Favorite book, movie?

A few recent favorites were the novel Imagine Me Gone by Adam Haslett and the movie Elle starring the incomparable Isabelle Huppert.

Favorite thing to do outside the station?

Picnics at the Barnsdall Art Park, concerts at the Bowl, trolling the aisles at Amoeba or The Last Bookstore.

What does KCRW mean to you?

KCRW is the ultimate BFF: always there for me, tells it like is, piques my curiosity, and knows where the party’s at! Seriously, in these trying times, KCRW is a voice of reason in real time. We’ve lost so many legendary musicians recently so to be able to turn on the radio and hear DJ’s commemorating these remarkable lives has been a great source of comfort.

Thank you, Scott! We’re so happy you’re a part of the KCRW family!
