KCRW’s July Volunteer of the Month

Written by

Meet Andrea! She’s made quite an impression in a short amount of time. Andrea started helping at events late last year. She then moved on to the Front Desk, and she’s a production assistant for three music shows! She always bring her positive attitude and helpfulness in whatever project she starts.

Where did you grow up and do you have any siblings? Pets?
I grew up right here in Los Angeles in West Adams with my brother Diego and sister Sajhal. I have three cats: Oak, Nala, and Simba. They’re the sweetest cats you’ll ever meet.

What 5 things would you wish you had if you were stranded on a deserted island?

A Walkman (might last longer than an iPod!)

My favorite album at the moment 99.9% by Kaytranada.

One book from the Harry Potter series.

And finally my planner and a pen because organization is key in my life.

What is your current occupation / what do you do outside of KCRW?

If I’m not at the station or volunteering at an event you can find me at the Hollywood Bowl!

I work there as an usher and it’s my second season with the team.

What is your fantasy occupation?
If this is just pure fantasy I’d have to say Olympic swimmer. I loved to swim and I participated in competitions when I was younger. It was always my wildest dream.

When did you first discover KCRW?
I discovered KCRW in college. I think it was my 2nd year at Cal State Northridge and my boyfriend told me I had to listen to the station. We would listen on our drives back to my house in L.A. and I remember thinking this was some of the best music I had ever heard. The music was never the same, which was great, and the programming during the day was useful to listen to because it was one of my resources for news. KCRW is now my go-to station wherever I am.

How did you find your way to our station for volunteering?

Well, I had a journalism class at CSUN that allowed students to work for the radio station on campus.  Before that semester ended I realized there was something

about radio that drew me in and I wanted to work in radio. I was looking up internships and ended up on KCRW’s website and saw an option to volunteer.

I sent an email to get on the volunteer list but I couldn’t do any events for a while. I was finally able to help out last October at the Homewalk event and that’s how I got started.

What’s your current volunteer position and how long have you been at it?
I do a little of everything. I help out at the front desk, I work events, and I help out as a production assistant. I think it’s been about 6 months!

Favorite volunteer moment?

Not too long ago I was doing a P.A. shift for Morning Becomes Eclectic. In the other room AlunaGeorge were recording a session for a future show.

They are one of my favorite artists and I was able to watch them record some songs, it was just surreal.

If you could get on the mic and say one sentence on the air, what would it be?
I’m going to be corny and lame but honestly I would say  “You’re listening to member supported KCRW…my name is Andrea and I can’t believe they let me say the tagline!”

What song(s) have you hit repeat on lately?

“Paralyzed” -Hanni El Khatib

“I Remember” -AlunaGeorge

“LITE SPOTS” -Kaytranada

“Lingerie & Candlewax”- Mayer Hawthorne

Favorite book, movie?

So Sad Today by Melissa Broder

The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Favorite thing to do outside the station ?
I like to take time to hang out with my family. We usually have busy schedules so it’s nice when we have a day together.

What does KCRW mean to you?
KCRW means community. There are countless people at the station who work hard to bring everything together from the free events to the shows on-air. Everyone is dedicated to producing the best work possible. Anytime there’s an event it’s great to meet people who support the station and hear why they became members. It’s like we’re all part of a club and I’m proud to be a part of it in some small way.

Thank you for all your help, Andrea! We’re very lucky to have you on the KCRW team.
