KCRW’s June Volunteer of the Month

Written by

Meet Patricia! She started her KCRW journey last fall during our big Homewalk event in Downtown LA. As a current SMC Intern, she’s been dedicated and hardworking. Patricia is always game to learn a new skill or available to help, for that reason she’s a part of the web team’s Morning Becomes Eclectic video stream. She also just started interning with the KCRW show, The Business. Patricia is a rising star within the station, so get to know her a little better!

Where did you grow up and do you have any siblings? Pets?

I grew up in Compton with one sibling, an older sister seven-year older than me. I also have a sassy 8-year-old pitbull and lab mix dog named Lolo to keep me busy at home.

What 5 things would you wish you had if you were stranded on a deserted island?

I’d wish I’d have a good playlist downloaded onto anything that I could listen to, a giant sturdy umbrella (you never know, sunburns are super painful), loads of freshwater, shoes (practical given how hot the sand gets on the Santa Monica waters), and Bear Grylls because that boy can make anything out of ANYTHING.

What is your current occupation / what do you do outside of KCRW?

I’m currently a full-time student at Santa Monica College. You can catch me hanging with friends at a movie, at a concert or at my once-eh-not-so-often yoga class in LB when I’m not busy with KCRW duties.

What is your fantasy occupation?

I’d like to be a producer at some point, either for television or radio.

When did you first discover KCRW?

I first discovered KCRW while on a car ride with my sister, a segment on StoryCorps caught my attention and I’ve been hooked ever since.

How did you find your way to our station for volunteering?

Being a KCRW fan and heading to SMC made the perfect mix. I went onto the station’s page last summer and sent my application in and boom, here we are.

What’s your current volunteer position and how long have you been at it?

I’m currently a part of several different parts of KCRW. I intern for the web video team and work as a part of the Morning Becomes Eclectic team through them- I’ve been at it for about five months now. I also volunteer for the KCRW Presents team since March of this year as well as recently joining The Business and the Summer Marketing Internship.

Favorite volunteer moment?

I have two favorite moments, I couldn’t just choose one. The first being the day that the Hot 8 Brass Band was on MBE, they are one of my favorite bands to ever come in. They had enough joy and soul to wake up anyone at the 8AM call time. The second being sharing a moment with the members of Buscabulla and talking about our Latin roots in between set up and rehearsal.

If you could get on the mic and say one sentence on the air, what would it be?

“Is this thing on?”

What song(s) have you hit repeat on lately?

We the People…- A Tribe Called Quest
Noise Pollution – Portugal. The Man
Hell of a Season- The Black Keys
Despues Del After- Kinky
Everything Now- Arcade Fire

Favorite book, movie?

Book: Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) by Mindy Kaling
Movie: Life Partners

Favorite thing to do outside the station?

My absolutely favorite thing to do is hang with great company, even the simplest of activities can make the most amazing memories when you’re with the best people.

What does KCRW mean to you?

KCRW is a place where you can work all day and go home knowing you’ve done an amazing job serving the greater good. KCRW is that comforting and exciting place for me, it’s kept me up to date and aware of what’s going on in the world but with a little groove with the music flowing through the station.

Isn’t Patricia great? We’re so lucky to be a part of the KCRW family!
