KCRW’s June Volunteer of the Month!

Written by

Meet Sarah, the impressive Sarah. When she came to KCRW, she was on a mission to meaningfully contribute to Good Food, and darn it if she didn’t exceed her goal. Quiet, but never shy (she’s just busy – shhh), give her a task and you’ll wonder where you can get another Sarah, stat!

What is your current occupation?
Mostly making radio at KCRW, though I’ve been trying to do some print reporting too. Anybody need a writer?

What is your fantasy occupation?
I want to be a sort of a female Jonathan Safran Foer, writing about Jewish life and American religion in general.

When did you first discover KCRW?
I have to confess that I was originally a KPCC girl, and only a KPCC girl. (KCRW played such weird music!) But then I started listening to an actual, physical, tune-able radio at home a couple years ago, and KPCC’s signal didn’t reach me. So to get my NPR fix I was forced to move up the dial and discover KCRW’s wonderful programming. I especially enjoyed Good Food, the show I’m on now, and I’ve even come to love KCRW’s music. (I’m still a KPCC fan, too.)

What’s your current volunteer position and how long have you been at it?
I’m a Segment Producer on Good Food, working on Evan Kleiman’s interviews and other content. I started as an intern during the stone fruit season of 2012 (that’s spring, for those of you who don’t mark time with fruit).

I’m also working on an upcoming web project called Dogs of LA that’s taking a look at the geography of pet ownership in Los Angeles County.

Favorite volunteer moment?
It was fun shivering in the performance studio the day Sang Yoon cryo-blanched herbs with liquid nitrogen for a Good Food video. Another favorite happened on the other side of the performance studio glass, sitting in the control room watching Laura Mvula perform on Morning Becomes Eclectic.

That woman can sing. I don’t know why I ever disliked KCRW music.

What song have you hit repeat on lately?
I’ve been listening to Tegan and Sara’s “I Was A Fool”. It’s so different from their previous work, so 80’s and affecting.

Favorite book, movie?
I am politically opposed to picking favorites, but I like to read detective novels and watch cheesy black-and-white movies.

Favorite thing to do outside the station?
I love to sing, and I write poetry and study Torah and Talmud (Jewish law).

What does KCRW mean to you?
KCRW has a rare environment where everyone is encouraged to follow their passions and be as interesting as possible. It’s an incredibly inspiring and creative group of people.

Thank you, Sarah, for bringing your awesomeness to KCRW (along with your souped-up brain)!
