KCRW’s June Volunteer of the Month: Elijah Hawk

Written by

Meet Elijah Hawk. Yes, his name sounds like a super-hero… and it turns out he actually kind-of is one! Elijah has managed to go from SMC Intern to master of the KCRW Spotify, keeping our awesome playlists updated and growing their numbers dramatically. He’s got a knack for keeping the music fresh and turning new people on to our tunes each week. On top of that, he’s just a great guy who is energetic and ambitious and wants to just hang out and do cool things! Glad to have you, Elijah.

Where did you grow up and do you have any siblings? Pets?
I grew up in the Land of Disney, Anaheim, CA. I have 4 siblings but only grew up with two of them. 2 sisters (1 younger and 1 older) and 2 brothers (both older than I am. Their names are Olivia, Kristina, Joshua, and Eric.

What 5 things would you wish you had if you were stranded on a deserted island?
1. Spotify subscription
2. A set of dumbbells (25-80lbs min)
3. A companion dog named Jet
4. The Art of Seduction by Robert Greene
5. Oh and headphones plus a music listening device so I could use my Spotify subscription.

What is your current occupation?
Community Support Agent at Ring.com

What is your fantasy occupation?
Indiana Jones

When did you first discover KCRW?
Probably 3 years ago when my friend Michael was listening to To The Point. He said it was the best radio station and I haven’t listened to anything else since.

How did you find your way to our station for volunteering?
I became a student at Santa Monica College knowing that KCRW was an on campus radio station always knowing that I was going to volunteer there

What’s your current volunteer position and how long have you been at it?
Well I’m transitioning from intern to volunteer right now. It’s been at least 4 months since I started volunteering. If I had to give myself a title it’d be Spotify Playlist Manager Extraordinaire

Favorite volunteer moment?
Hanging out with Garth and Jason in the studio adding Youtube links to their online playlists

If you could get on the mic and say one sentence on the air, what would it be?
Oh I couldn’t just say one sentence, but it’d be cool to talk about the weather like Kajon Cermak

What song(s) have you hit repeat on lately?
Currently I’m listening to Some Minds by Flume probably, definitely way too much

Favorite book, movie?
Book: Omerta by Mario Puzo
Movie: The Warriors

Favorite thing to do outside the station ?
I love going to the beach, watching sports games with friends, and programming.

What does KCRW mean to you?
KCRW is my eyes and ears for LA. I don’t know what I’d do if I couldn’t listen to KCRW everyday on my morning commute to and from work and school!

Elijah may have held an impressive amount of careers and odd jobs over the years, but hopefully he feels like KCRW is more of a home away from home. Our door’s always open, so come on in Elijah!
