KCRW’s May Volunteer of the Month

Written by

Meet Katie! She’s been an awesome addition to the volunteer team for a while now… always reliable and warm, a  hard worker through and through. Recently, she made waves as a member of our Membership Drive Food Crew and really showed us her stuff. Christine Hermosisima from the Drive Team has this nice reflection: “Katie has been sharp on the job from the get-go, always two steps ahead of the game and she does it all with a smile.  She’s as flexible and energetic as one needs to be when doing a tough job like food crew.  She also knows what it means to be part of a team and never hesitates to help anyone!  She’s truly a pleasure to be around.”

Where did you grow up and do you have any siblings? Pets?
I am a native of Los Angeles, I grew up in the valley to be more specific, I have a sister and a brother. I am the oldest child, which means I’m superior by birth. We had a lot of pets growing up but I don’t have any currently.

What 5 things would you wish you had if you were stranded on a deserted island?
Five necessities on a desert island would be

Music and some sort of way to listen to it

An ample supply of coffee.

Paper and writing utensils, preferably pens.

A Kindle, loaded with a bunch of books.

And a pillow from my bed.

I’m pretty sure I’ve exceeded the five items but some of these I’m counting as one.

What is your current occupation / what do you do outside of KCRW?
Outside of KCRW I write for various music websites and I work for a nautical themed grocery store that ends in Joe’s

What is your fantasy occupation?
Producing my own radio show that has something to do with music.

When did you first discover KCRW?
I first began listening to KCRW while being chauffeured around in the backseat of my moms Volvo. Those listening habits were something I never rebelled against as I grew older.

How did you find your way to our station for volunteering?
I had been involved with my college radio station, including having my own show, and I knew I wanted to pursue radio further. I sent in an application to be a weekly volunteer and after waiting patiently, for almost a year, I found my way into the hallways of the Basement.

What’s your current volunteer position and how long have you been at it?
I’m currently volunteering in the membership department and I’m also a Production Assistant for Dan Wilcox. I helped with Food Crew, for the pledge drive, which was a really fun but also exhausting, as I was there at 6:30 every morning.

Favorite volunteer moment?
My favorite volunteer moment, that’s difficult to choose. If I have to choose something fairly recent, I volunteered at the Eating Out Loud, Lucky Peach event. That was really fun hanging out with volunteers and eating our way through Grand Central Market. It was delicious.

If you could get on the mic and say one sentence on the air, what would it be?
I’d probably wish somebody a Happy Birthday, my brother’s is coming up so “Happy Birthday Matt”

What song(s) have you hit repeat on lately?
I am pretty obsessed with the Courtney Barnett covering The Grateful Dead’s “New Speedway Boogie.” I think I could be a fan of The Grateful Dead if Courtney covered more of their songs.

Favorite book, movie?
I don’t know how to answer this question, there’s too many to choose from. So I’ll just tell you about a book I just finished called Kristin Lavransdatter, it’s a series of books written by a Norwegian woman in the 1920’s. I know I’m not really selling it here, but it’s really good.

Favorite thing to do outside the station ?
I love browsing through a record store. Going to see live music and searching for the perfect cup of coffee.

What does KCRW mean to you?
As a listener, I am grateful for the content that KCRW produces. It means being informed on culture and news, and a love for music, not being played commercially. As a volunteer I appreciate how KCRW brings Los Angeles together as a community. Whether it is through listening or attending an event, KCRW connects people, through one thing, the radio.

Katie you are awesome. So glad that you can be a part of so many departments here at KCRW and we really appreciate that you roll up your sleeves and jump right in to all the cool projects we have!
