May Volunteer of the Month: Lauren Tyler!

Written by

Where did you grow up and do you have any siblings? Pets?
Grew up right here in beautiful Santa Monica because my parents knew it was the best city in the world. You can quote me on that. I’ve got 5 pets! A brother, a sister, 2 cats, and a dog. I love my dog.

What 5 things would you wish you had if you were stranded on a deserted island?
Hmm. How deserted is the island? Because I mean people say deserted but it’s usually got like killer boars or something on it. I guess unlimited access to fresh water, one of those Costco size packs of lighters, a library’s worth of books(good for entertainment and fire!), and Bear Grylls. Oh, and to not be stranded on a deserted island.

What is your current occupation?
I am the Front of House Manager at a cafe and bakery called Uplifters Kitchen. It’s on Ocean Park. AND EVERYONE SHOULD GO TO THERE.

What is your fantasy occupation?
SLEEP ALL DAY EVERY DAY.

When did you first discover KCRW?
I’ve been listening to KCRW since before I had object permanence.

How did you find your way to our station for volunteering?
Oh! Um, is it okay to say I don’t remember? I applied to work the front desk initially I know, and was rejected outright. I don’t harbor any resentment about that at all.

What’s your current volunteer position and how long have you been at it?
I work the front desk on Tuesday evenings, been doing that oh, almost a year?
And also I am working social media for the Independent Producer Project. Only been doing that a month or so.

Favorite volunteer moment?
Oh, all of them. But probably the day that Meaghan Coonan, Danny Sway and I made a KCRW chair fort, complete with fake fireplace sounds. That was a good day.

If you could get on the mic and say one sentence on the air, what would it be?
Soylent Green is people!

What song(s) have you hit repeat on lately?
Carolina Low-The Decemberists. I saw them at the Greek last week and that song really wormed its way into my head.
What Kind of Man-Florence and the Machine
The Wolf-Mumford and Sons

Favorite book, movie?
Favorite Book-To Kill A Mockingbird. My boyfriend bought me a first edition as a one-year anniversary present and that’s how I knew I would somehow need to trick him into marrying me. Five years later, my mission is going splendidly.
Favorite Movie-Uhh, pass. I love all movies, especially the terrible ones. My current mission is to get everyone I know to see Fifty Shades of Grey, because it is probably the most enjoyable hate-watch I’ve seen in at least 3 years, and if the next two don’t get made, I’ll be heartbroken.

Favorite thing to do outside the station ?
Is it okay if I say sleep again? But actually it’s to go to every concert I can fit in before I’m too old and crotchety to stand for 3 hours.

What does KCRW mean to you?
Music, News, Family. That’s probably the most I can say without making it weird. LOVE YOU GUYS

Disclaimer:

I neither confirm nor deny the KCRW chair fort, it’s creation, or its awesomeness. I can only confirm Lauren’s awesomeness.
