Meaghan Coonan is KCRW’s March Volunteer of the Month!

Written by

Calling Meaghan “Minnesota nice” would be a bold understatement.  Her sweet voice and kind demeanor has a way of disarming everyone she talks to.  Under her disarming sweetness is a sharp sense of humor.  She wins us over with her kindness, and bowls us over with her wit.  I dare you to not have your heart  completely melted by hearing her exclaim “Oh, shucks!” with complete sincerity.

Where did you grow up and are you an only child?

I grew up in St.Paul MN with my sisters Maura and Kiera. There’s an awesome music scene in the Twin Cites, and amazing beer. I miss it there sometimes! I miss my sisters as well, of course. I should have mentioned my love for them before my love of Minnesota beer. Whoops…

What is your current occupation?

After 5 years of being a Barista, I’ve started a temporary job in the magical KCRW mail room! These are exciting times…

What is your fantasy occupation?

Polar Bear.

When did you first discover KCRW?

When I worked at Hear Music, we featured the Sounds Eclectico compitation, and I thought it was so rad. I was being opened up to a lot about World Music at the time, and this album knocked my socks off! I got my first taste of Cafe Tacuba, Kinky, Manu Chao, Ozomatli, and so many others from this record, plus artwork by Beck. I stared swooning pretty hard for all things KCRW following this discovery.

How did you find your way to our station for volunteering?

I follow KCRW on Twitter. One day, they tweeted a link listing “5 Great Aspects of Being a KCRW Street Team Member.” So I applied, and found out that all the reasons were true!

What’s your current volunteer position and how long have you been at it?

I’ve been rocking the Front Desk every Tuesday since September. I also give people amazing swag at events, as well as train to do production assistance with the music programming, and I’m a very diligent mail room temp. Fun!

Favorite volunteer moment?

Every moment of Masquerade. Henry Rollins, Anne Litt, Chris Douridas, Mario Cotto, Travis Holcombe and Marion Hodges are all my heroes, and working with them was a real-deal treat. KCRW really knows how to party, and I was super honored to be a part of that night.

If you could get on the mic and say one sentence on the air, what would it be?

I would probably just say, “Shucks, oh gosh…” or something.  I’m way to shy for that on air business.  I’m so shy I can’t even make up some hypothetical sentence I would say.

What song have you hit repeat on lately?

So Many! Toni Fatti by White Denim, Cult Logic by Miike Snow, Get Away by Yuck,  Hold on by Alabama Shakes, Play Your Cards Out By Polica, Sweet Sour by Band of Skulls…. I’ll make you a CD if you want.

Favorite book, movie?

My Favorite book is The Moon Is Down by John Steinbeck. My Favorite movie is Natural Born Killers.

Favorite thing to do outside the station (hobbies, recreation, etc.)?

Comedy Meltdown, Bar Trivia, and going to the beach. Love Love Love that ocean.

W hat does KCRW mean to you?

It means a whole bunch to me! There is so much incredible music and fantastic experiences that I have taken away from my time with KCRW. Everyone here is a delight, and I’m so thankful to be able to have KCRW in my life.

We are thankful to be able to have Meaghan in our lives.  She works tirelessly and approaches everything we ask of her with a willful optimism and excitement that is infectiously uplifting.  Thanks for everything Meaghan!
