Nothing says NFL is back like a good quarterback controversy.
And that’s what the Los Angeles Rams have on their hands all of a sudden.
In their first year back in LA, the Rams raced out of the gate quickly, winning three out of their first four games, including two against division rivals. But now they’ve dropped three straight, and their record has dropped to 3 wins and 4 losses. In their last game, which was played in London against the New York Giants, the Rams were shut out over the final three quarters and their quarterback Case Keenum threw four interceptions.
As they approach the mid-way point of the season, pressure is building on Rams coaches to bench Keenum in favor of rookie Jared Goff, the Rams’ made the first pick in this year’s NFL draft. Goff has yet to take a snap in the NFL and he may not be ready. But fans are clamoring for a change and the team is eager to make a good showing and engender good will in its re-debut in Los Angeles.
But Goff might not be much help, according to Matt “Money” Smith, host of “NFL Fantasy Live” on the NFL Network and co-host of the “Petros and Money Show” on AM 570 LA Sports. He says the young quarterback from Cal might not be the player the Rams thought they were drafting at number one.
“It could not have gone worse (for the Rams). Just because it seemed like all the momentum was for this other quarterback, Carson Wentz, who was selected with the second pick by the Philadelphia Eagles,” Smith says. “The Rams trade six picks to move up to number one, and they pick a quarterback that when he gets into camp you realize that he’s nowhere near ready to play in an NFL-style offense. And I wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t see him at all this year because he’s just plain not ready.”
