1. Deborah Sussman Bags at LACMA: Last week to see Expressionism in Germany and France
In honor of environmental and graphics designer Deborah Sussman, who died last month, LACMA store has replaced its regular red bags with special edition bags designed by Deborah Sussman in 1966-67, as “part of a program to raise the museum’s standards” at that time. The museum says she developed the design using paper cutouts with colors and patterns inspired by a trip to India. She later co-founded the firm Sussman/Prejza, making an impact on Los Angeles with projects like the 1984 LA Olympics and branding for the cities of Santa Monica and Culver City.
The bags will be available for about a year but now is a good time to go to the museum as this week is the last for catching their exhibition about the mutual influence of French and German artists: Expressionism in Germany and France: From Van Gogh to Kandinsky.

2. The 2nd Annual Coaster Show
La Luz de Jesus Gallery, together with the folks at LA Beer Week (starts September 20) enlisted painters, illustrators, animators, tattooists, sculptors or collage artists to “take a love of craft brewing and elevates it to high art.” This year’s show, its second following a successful first outing last year, features over one thousand and fifty individual pieces on display; the coasters are for sale for up to $250.

3. EAT. DRINK. ART./LAX Live Arts Exchange
EAT. DRINK. ART
Help support LAMAG, LA’s municipal art gallery at the Barnsdall Art Park by attending a jamboree of arts including live painting, performance artists, giant puppets, sketching (nude models provided), live music (featuring musicians from “The Voice,” “American Idol,” and “The X Factor”), food trucks (The Urban Oven, Let’s Be Frank, Postcards Central American Soul Fusion and Coolhaus) and a silent auction with works by artists including Larry Bell, Alice Fellows, Joy Feuer, John Frame, Mark Steven Greenfield, Heather Lembcke, Leonel Matheu, Ed Ruscha, Gregory Siff, and Wayne White. KCRW’s DJ Dan Wilcox will spin the tunes.

Live Arts Exchange (LAX) Festival
Another arts smorgasbord takes place at the second annual Live Arts Exchange (LAX) Festival, a performance series featuring local artists in “contemporary theater, dance, music, and cross-genre performance.” Starting officially on Thursday with a launch party at the Bootleg Theater, LAX promises such highlights An Evening With William Shatner Asterisk, a video/performance hybrid performed by New York’s Phil Solanoff “creating a dynamic Shatner oracle that relays a message about contemporary art and science from the future.”

4. Explore Elysian Valley with Play The LA River and Frogtown Artwalk
Play The LA River
Play The LA River, created by environmentalist Jenny Price and other activists and academics, is aimed at getting Angelenos to “play” along all 51 miles of the L.A. River, in the hope people will discover the river hidden in their midst and become engaged with its future, particularly the 40 miles that are not part of the Glendale Narrows project (an 11-mile stretch that has been slated for ecosystem restoration by the Federal Government to the tune of one billion dollars.) The launch party is next Saturday at Marsh Park, one of the new parks in the Elysian Valley stretch of the river.

Frogtown Artwalk
And while at the river on Saturday, check out the Frogtown Artwalk, a free tour of the studios of the artists and artisans of Elysian Valley (aka Frogtown). Run by the Elysian Valley Arts Collective, www.evartscollective.com.

5. Architects for Animals
More from pet world: this time the emphasis is on kitties, not dogs. You are invited to the Herman Miller Showroom in Culver City to sip cocktails amidst modern furniture and architect-designed cat houses, created by Architects For Animals to benefit Fixnation, an organization that bills itself as organization dedicated to helping community cats in need. Jackson Galaxy, host of Animal Planet’s My Cat From Hell and author of Catification, will be there; the event is sponsored by Found Animals (the nonprofit attached to Adopt & Shop.) Above, “Cat Cube” shelter of concrete and reclaimed wood cube, designed by Standard Architecture.
