“Bohemian Modern” architect Barbara Bestor is known almost as much for her pop-themed Silverlake parties as for her accessible Modern design. So her latest project, “Disco Silencio,” an exhibit at SCI-Arc, her alma mater, seems like the perfect fusion of her skills.

‘Disco Silencio, described by Bestor as “a plywood polyhedron of hedonism” that incorporates “technologies of surface deception inspired by World War I Razzle Dazzle camouflage,” opens April 1 at Sci-Arc and will run through May 15. However, if “disco” and “silence” seem like unnatural partners, then come to Friday’s opening night party, starting at 7pm, when DJs Marge and Cathy will be spinning. ForumFest: The Los Angeles Forum for Architecture and Urban Design is back with another ForumFest this Saturday at St. Thomas the Apostle School.
From their site: “The night’s activities will include building tours led by the architects; a silent book auction that will feature signed architectural monographs as well as Forum Portfolio 2, which includes artists such as Catherine Opie, and will also include a Verner Panton chair donated by Vitra; cocktails, as well as food provided by Bling Bling Dumpling and Fruit and Flour; and finally, the announcement of a new annual event to honor the memory of our friend, former board member John Chase. Tom Schnabel of KCRW will DJ the event.”

“Aerotropolis is a book about what the world’s cities will look like as they are designed (or re-designed) according to the logic of globalization. For John D. Kasarda and Greg Lindsay, the answer is the Aerotropolis, a combination of giant airport, planned city, shipping hub, and business district.”
The talk will also feature Geoff Manaugh, a contributing editor at Wired UK and the founder of the popular website BLDGBLOG.

Since its founding in 1987, the LA Forum or Architecture and Urban Design has been promoting innovation and ideas in architecture through talks, tours, competitions and publications. Every year they host a fundraiser and this year’s takes place Saturday night at the St. Thomas the Apostle School, shown left, designed by Forum boardmember Margaret Griffin and her partner John Enright. Speaking of disco, you can expect full-on party fever at ForumFest, since KCRW’s Tom Schnabel is DJ-ing; I can attest from past experience that he spins sounds that will get even the most buttoned-up architects onto the dance floor.

In addition, says the Forum, “the night’s activities will include building tours led by the architects; a silent book auction featuring Forum Portfolio 2, which includes artists such as Catherine Opie, and will also include a Verner Panton chair donated by Vitra; cocktails, as well as food provided by Bling Bling Dumpling and Fruit and Flour.
