Stefan Bishop is the designer-craftsman who was interviewed on this DnA about his wood and bronze objects that sit at the cusp of furniture and art. On Saturday he will join his Glassell Park neighbors Wakako Takagi and Fridolin (Frido) Beisert for the Saturday afternoon opening of their new store and studio, named Baum-kuchen, a Japanese-German life and design partnership that marries “German Bauhaus and Japanese wabi-sabi harmoniously” (as shown in the image above.)
Bishop will showcase this limited edition bronze “puddle” table, pictured below (contact the artist for details); SWRVE, a bicycle apparel company, will display their work, and Gastrobus Food Truck will be there to serve hungry shoppers. Baum-kuchen’s opening is from 1-6pm at 3423 Verdugo Road, Los Angeles, CA 90065. Expect to hear more from Baum-kuchen on a future DnA.
And by the way, the name “Baum-kuchen,” meaning “tree cake,” is a German pastry, so named because of its likeness to a tree stump. Wakako Takagi says the “tree cake,” “represents layers of happiness that have been built with time, aging beautifully.”
