Julius Shulman is is known for his epoch-defining black and white images of glamorously lived-in Socal Midcentury Modern houses, designed by the likes of Richard Neutra and Pierre Koenig. But that was only a part of his huge oeuvre. A new book, “Julius Schulman Los Angeles: The Birth of a Modern Metropolis” presents, says Rizzoli, the publisher, many never-before-seen images on a subject closest to Shulman’s heart: Los Angeles and its environs-including Palm Springs and the San Fernando Valley. Meet the authors, Sam Lubell, Douglas Woods and Judy McKee on Saturday, April 9, at Craig Krull Gallery at Santa Monica’s Bergamot Station from 3 to 5 p.m. for a book signing. There will also be a panel discussion with the authors and the Getty Research Institute’s Anne Blecksmith on Friday, April 15 at 7 p.m. at Woodbury University (home of the Julius Shulman Institute) in Burbank.

From the release:

“The photographs in this book offer the clearest insight into Shulman’s career as a photographer, including his street photography, night images, portraits, and even celebrity work, all taken with the eye of showing Los Angeles as a living organism, simultaneously vibrant and volatile depending on the neighborhood.

Selected from his personal collections as well as his official archives, the photographs included in this book represent not only lesser-known and never-before-seen material, but also some of Shulman’s own personal favorites. JULIUS SHULMAN LOS ANGELES is a guide to the spirit of truly unique place.
