Sad news today about the passing at age 85 of Max Palevsky, computer technology pioneer (who claimed not to own his own computer), supporter of liberal political causes and arts and architecture patron. Among beneficiaries of his largesse was the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; he helped underwrite, and contributed pieces from his collection to, their ambitious 2004 show, “The Arts and Crafts Movement in Europe and America, 1880-1920: Design for the Modern World.” He also patronized innovative architecture, owning owned homes designed by Craig Ellwood, George Washington Smith, and Coy Howard. Max spoke with DnA in 2006, about another LACMA show he supported: of postmodernist design by Memphis founder Ettore Sottsass at LACMA.
