Redesigning Art Center; Barbie Tours LA

Art Center is branching out -- into the city of Pasadena and the world. Frances Anderton speaks with college president Richard Koshalek and architect Kevin Daly about plans for a new building and a new vision for a great LA design school. Then she speaks with costume designer Greg LaVoi about the marriage of two icons of American pop culture, Barbie and LA.

Former director of MOCA, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Richard Koshalek is president of Art Center College of Design.

Kevin Daly is a partner at Daly Genik Architects, which has designed homes and schools across in the Southland, including the Camino Nuevo Charter Academy in MacArthur Park and the South Campus of Art Center College of Design, due to complete construction in May.

Costume designer Greg Lavoi is the creator of Barbie Loves LA: America-s Favorite Doll Sees the Sites, published by Santa Monica-based Angel City Press.

Zaha Hadid: Thursday, March 11

Internationally acclaimed architect Zaha Hadidwill present a lecture at UCLA's Freud Playhouse (6:30pm), sponsored by the UCLA Department of Architecture and Urban Design. The event is free and open to the public. Seating is on a first-come, first-serve basis. No tickets or reservations are required. Campus parking is $7 and is available in Lot 3. (Enter the campus at Sunset Boulevard and Hilgard Avenue.)

Grand Avenue Expansion Symposium: Saturday, March 13

Architects Zaha Hadid, Frank Gehry, Jean Nouvel, Kevin Daly and Harrry Cobb will take part in a symposium about their team's entry for the Grand Avenue expansion limited competition. Richard Weintraub, the developer attached to the team, will also be present. Time and location to be decided. Call Weintraub Financial Services at 310-457-8130 for more information. The Art Center Design Conference: Stories from the Source: Design Excursions Out of the Ordinary: Thursday, March 18 - Sunday, March 21

The conference, part of an international outreach from America-s premier design school, will probe the ideas and issues that are core to design innovation today. Conference will be held at the college's South Campus in downtown Pasadena, California
