Japan’s famed Muji, brand, especially beloved by designers, has put down anchor on Hollywood boulevard, in the former Galaxy shopping center. The space is vast – over 8000 square feet – and is already attracting diehard fans from all over LA. But some question the choice of location.

But while Muji devotees, like laimyours Kyle Fitzpatrick, are thrilled the store is in LA at last, some are puzzled at its choice of location: Hollywood. Do the store’s simple, classic basics in subtle grays and beige fit in the area known — and treasured — as an avenue of tacky, with its walk of fame, its liquor stores, gaudy souvenirs and Darth Vader lookalikes?
Alissa Walker sets off to find out why the company made this choice, and meets Hiroyoshi Azami, president of Muji USA. Pulling out his Tap card, he reveals that he is thinking ahead — to the emerging LA of high density and public transit.
