good4ciclaviaflyer2smallerGOOD magazine party for CiclaVia: This Saturday, GOOD, the magazine for people who “give a damn,” is throwing a party (and fundraiser) for the bicycle advocacy group CicLAvia to help them bring the event back to L.A.’s streets this year. Nice timing in view of the passage this week of the City of Los Angeles Bike Plan. Last year, CicLAvia made seven and a half miles of streets available to bicyclists on Oct. 10, 2010 “There will be all kinds of music, food, free beer and wine, and other fun stuff.” Saturday, March 5, 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Atwater Crossing, 3229 Casitas Avenue. Tickets start from $20 and you can get them here.

Tadao Ando lecture at the Hammer Museum: From the Hammer Museum: “Tadao Ando is the only architect to have won the discipline’s four most prestigious prizes: the Pritzker, Carlsberg, Praemium Imperiale, and Kyoto Prize. His award-winning designs can be seen throughout Japan, as well as in France, Italy, Spain, and the U.S. Taschen’s recently published comprehensive monograph of his work is entitled Ando’s Complete Works to Date 1975–2010.  Architect and colleague Kulapat Yantrasast of wHY Architecture will serve as translator for Mr. Ando.  A book signing will precede the lecture. ”  Tuesday, March 8 at 7 p.m. at the Hammer Museum’s Billy Wilder Theater. Free.

Rock and Roll at SMMUSD, March 5: This is very loosely design-related (as in, it is a benefit for the Arts), so excuse the shameless plus but it is for a good cause in my back yard: SMMUSD Student Musicians will join rock and roll legends for a night of unforgettable music. Grammy award winning band America, renowned vocalist Richard Page (Mr. Mister), international recording artists Venice will perform for the 8th annual benefit concert to support the Santa Monica-Malibu Education Foundation’s For The Arts campaign. Hosting this event for the 5th time is Emmy-winning journalist, Mark Steines of Entertainment Tonight. 100% of the ticket sales and live auction proceeds will be used to fund arts programs in Santa Monica-Malibu public schools. Barnum Hall Theater, Santa Monica High School Campus. 601 Pico Blvd, Santa Monica, California, 90405. Saturday, March 5, 2011. Doors: 6:00pm Show: 7:00pm. Tickets at smmef.org.

Rodarte at MOCA: Kate and Laura Mulleavy, the sisters behind the design group Rodarte, gained fame when their ballet costumes designs were featured in the movie Black Swan. (They were also included in a recent episode of DnA). Now, you can see those costumes and more at the Museum of Contemporary Art in the “States of Matter” exhibit. From the release: “Rodarte creates unusual works through a highly elaborate and intensive processing and reconstruction of materials. Fabrics are often subjected to unusual, sometimes alchemical methods of alteration—dyed, stretched, stained, burned, or otherwise manipulated—before being reassembled as sculptural ready-to-wear.” The exhibit opens Friday, March 4, 7–10 p.m. at the MOCA Pacific Design Center. The exhibit will be on view until June 5.
