The Producers Guild picked The Big Short, the Screen Actors Guild picked Spotlight and the Directors Guild picked Alejandro Iñárritu and The Revenant for best picture at their recent awards ceremonies. With the three-way split, which has only happened four times before in Oscar history, the Oscar for best picture could go to any, or possibly even none of the above. Now, the three frontrunners are all out campaigning, emphasizing the importance of their films. Spotlight is about abusive Catholic priests in Boston and The Big Short follows the lead-up to the 2008 housing collapse. Director Adam McKay has been to Washington, DC. twice to screen his film. And Leonardo DiCaprio, star of The Revenant met with the Pope to talk about the environment and climate change.
