Kim and John reflect on how this Summer season is being defined by the outsized movies that have bombed and the -- usually less expensive films-- that have done well. They discuss how hugely expensive films like Lone Ranger, R.I.P.D, White House Down, Pacific Rim and others have resulted in massive losses for their studios backers. Many of these were movies whose studios hoped could be the first in a new lucrative franchise but failed to deliver the audience. Meanwhile, there others that are faring well: the sequels Despicable Me 2 and Fast and Furious 6; the lower budget horror films The Purge and The Conjuring and the Bridesmaids inspired female buddy comedy The Heat.
