Last week, the Santa Ana City Council heard the latest proposal for a Wellness District to be established in the city's gentrifying downtown. Brought forth by a coalition of community groups, it seeks to have the city commit funds to a variety of initiatives to promote health for the city's super-majority working-class Latino population: community gardens, bike paths, encouraging health-oriented businesses to open, and also a re-branding of the city's Fourth Street as La Calle Cuatro. But critics of the proposal say it runs right into Santa Ana's years-long efforts to turn its downtown into a center of food, bars, and offices. Can health and hipsters live in harmony?
