Last week, Orange County Sheriff Don Barnes announced that his department would no longer house detainees for ICE in local jails. The move is a reversal of long-standing policies that saw the OC sheriff actively work with immigration officials to both detain and identify undocumented immigrants arrested for local crimes. Barnes claims that the move is purely a financial one based on the need for more space in local jails to better treat mentally ill patients, but immigration-rights activists claim that the sheriff is responding to their years-long critiques of the ICE collaboration. What will happen next?
