Santa Ana Pushes for Its Own DTLA

The city of Santa Ana is unique in Orange County in that it has multiple, old high-rise buildings in its downtown. Now, developers are working with city officials to try and turn them from commercial offices into residential units, in a process known as adaptive reuse. It's the same process that's credited for the spurring of the new, hipster downtown LA, and proponents in Santa Ana think such policies will help bring more vibrancy to the downtown. But critics are wary of such a move bringing further gentrification, and are already criticizing the city's passing of an ordinance that lets developers skim on affordable-housing requirements. Can the two sides come to an understanding?
