Steps Forward, Backwards with How OC Law Enforcement Treat Mentally Ill

Hosted by  •

Last year, the Orange County Grand Jury issued a report blasting local law enforcement for what they considered inadequate training in dealing with mentally ill. Earlier this month, the Grand Jury issued a review and another report that both praised and condemned changes. The review praised a group of police departments and the Orange County Sheriff's Department for undergoing training to deal with mentally ill, but suggested more training is needed. On the jail front, the review criticized the lack of resources for mentally ill inmates and the practice of keeping nearly all of them in the general population or putting them in isolation. As law enforcement budgets keep getting cut and the homeless population increases, can law enforcement adjust accordingly?
