Last week, the Orange County Registrar of Voters announced that Bao Nguyen won the Garden Grove mayor's race, beating longtime incumbent Bruce Broadwater by a 15-vote margin. A recount is currently underway, but history will be made if the results hold. Not only would Nguyen be the youngest mayor in the history of Garden Grove and the first Vietnamese mayor of a city with a population of over 100,000, but Bao also represents something almost unheard-of: A Vietnamese-American Democrat winning in Little Saigon. Bao won despite the enclave's political machine, which has long leaned Republican. Will Bao's victory herald a new day in Little Saigon? How far can he go?
