Oscar 'Misses' by Gemma Dempsey, producer of The Treatment
This list comes from a selection of guests that have appeared on The Treatment with Elvis Mitchell over the last 12 months.
All of the films were critically acclaimed and have garnered nominations and awards from film festivals around the globe. Only
some have managed to secure nominations for an Academy Award, and if they have, for unexpected - or according to some -
misplaced categories.

Let us know if you agree or disagree with the nominations - or lack of them - from the list below...

1. Sally Hawkins - won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy/Musical Category for "Happy-Go-Lucky" but did not receive an Oscar nomination, a glaring omission according to the film’s director Mike Leigh. Do you agree with Mike?

2. Christopher Nolan - director "The Dark Knight" has received 8 nominations but not for Best Director/Best Film. Some propose that the Academy tends to vote for more ‘artistic’ films rather than blockbusters - right or wrong?

3. Steven Soderbergh - "Che Part 1 & Part II" - despite a tour de force performance by Benicio Del Toro in the lead role, and being nominated for the Golden Palm at last year's Cannes film Festival, it has received zero nods from the Academy. Was Soderbergh’s 4 hour gamble a mistake or is Cuba still as much of a thorn in the sides of the US as it was 50 years ago?

4. Andrew Stanton - director "Wall-e" - the film is nominated in the Best Animated Feature category but many feel it warrants Best Film. It has also received a nomination for best screenplay despite the first third of the film being devoid of dialogue! It is more about quality than quantity?

5. Darren Aronofsky - director "The Wrestler" - should he be nominated for best director or is it all about Mickey Rourke (up for Best Actor) and Marisa Tomei (up for Best Supporting Actress)?

6. Ed Zwick - director "Defiance" - should it have got more nominations then just the one, for its score by James Newton Howard?

7. Lance Hammer - director "Ballast" - he won Best Directing at 2008 Sundance but didn’t get any Oscar nominations - should it have?

8. Ed Harris - director "Appaloosa" - should he or any of the film’s stars (Viggo Mortenson, Jeremy Irons) be recognized by the Academy?

9. Don Cheadle - lead actor "Traitor" - a politically charged movie too hot to handle?

10. Wayne Wang - director "A Thousand Years of Good Prayers" - beautifully acted by Henry O, but didn’t make the Academy’s list
