Age of Reflections, KCRW & Synth History Presents
Suzanne Ciani: A journey to the edges of dimensional sound + light on her Out of the Ocean Tour

First Congregational Church of LA
Join Reflections for a historic evening with trailblazing electronic music composer Suzanne Ciani. We’re thrilled to present her in quadraphonic sound in LA at the stunning FCCLA church, a neo-gothic cathedral nestled in the heart of Koreatown. For her Out of the Ocean Tour, Suzanne weaves together a set of ecstatic noise and transcendent ambient passages on her Buchla 200e modular synth. Composer Clarice Jensen opens the evening with a set for solo cello and electronics. We’ll pair their music with a visionary light show, immersing ourselves in an unforgettable experience.
About Suzanne Ciani As fearlessly innovative as she is deeply romantic, Suzanne Ciani has been at the creative forefront of electronic music and technology for over 50 years. She’s a five-time Grammy-nominated composer with over 20 solo albums, including The Velocity of Love, Flowers of Evil, and her landmark LIVE Quadraphonic, which restarted her Buchla modular performances. In the 1980s, her commercial production company, Ciani-Musica, Inc., was the leader in the field of sound design and TV spot scoring. She provided the voice and sounds for Bally's groundbreaking "Xenon" pinball machine, created Coca-Cola’s pop-and-pour sound, and carved out a niche as one of the most creatively successful female composers in the world. A Life in Waves, a documentary about Ciani’s life and work, debuted at SXSW in 2017. Ciani is a graduate of Wellesley College and holds a Masters in Music Composition from the University of California, Berkeley.
About Clarice Jensen Clarice Jensen is a renowned cellist, composer, and music director. Live, she layers her cello through shifting loops and a chain of effects to explore a series of rich, drone-based sound fields. A versatile collaborator, Jensen has recorded and performed with visionaries like Jóhann Jóhannsson, Max Richter, Björk, Harold Budd, Stars of the Lid, and released solo albums on Geographic North and Fat Cat’s 130701 imprint. Her music has been described by Self-Titled as “heavily processed, incredibly powerful neo-classical pieces that seem to come straight from another astral plane”; while Bandcamp remarked upon “a kaleidoscope of pulsing movement rich in acoustic beating and charged with other psychoacoustic effects, constantly shifting in density and viscous timbre."
About Reflections Reflections is a deep listening event series, founded in 2023. We present legends of new age/ambient/experimental music with projection-mapped visuals, uniting sound, light, and sacred architecture for a singularly visceral experience.
