The great thing about blues music is the open format it creates for jamming. Some of the all time great blues songs are a collection of talented musicians jamming and riffing off one another, taking their turns doing their thing.
When Morning Becomes Eclectic welcomed Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite, the soul of blues music was palpable. Ben’s classic guitar riffs and perfect timing accompanied by his strong and pained voice folded seemelssly with Charlie’s harmonica.
The setting for the show was in the KCRW studio, but it might have well been a blues bar off a back street in Memphis.
The truly impressive thing about these two playing together is that they become a collection of artists instead of a sum of their parts. This isn’t your “Fight For Your Mind” Ben Harper playing with a blues guy. Instead they are two great blues musicians whose sound is familiar yet unique.
Check out the single from the session “We Can’t End This Way” but the entire set is fantastic and worth your time.
