I was extremely lucky to get my hands on an early copy of Dr Dog’s latest album “Be the Void” over the holidays. I stayed in LA and it was my soundtrack to driving around this city as all the people emptied out of it (frankly, my favorite time in LA). It was unseasonably warm and Dr Dog seemed to be the perfect match – they have hook after hook but their songs aren’t ever light, airy pop fare. It’s not heavy either. They have just the right amount of substance, and that that has kept me hooked from their very first album “Easy Beat”.

On their new songs, they seem to have perfected the balance between their lo-fi sensibilities and a sound that can fill substantial venues, which they are now capable of packing with fans. The addition of a new drummer and multi-instrumentalist Dimitri (from Golden Boots) seems to have re-energized their live show. (and Dimitri’s astronaut helmet and the animal heads they hung up in the walls of the studio added to the excitement).

Check out a really fun live set in the archives here.
