Luaka Bop recently put together an excellent compilation of enigmatic Nigerian disco king William Onyeabor, entitled “Who Is William Onyeabor?”
The back story of the hoops the label had to jump through in order to procure the rights to release Onyeabor’s work took on almost SugarMan-esque proportions as detailed in this article in the Guardian.
To celebrate the long-gestating release of their Onyeabor compilation, Luaka Bop put out one of a series of remixes by contemporary artists reworking Onyeabor’s recordings, the latest of which is by French producer Joakim doing “Good Name”.
Denver-based garage rockers Pizza Time just released one of the most entertaining releases of the year (in my humble opinion) for free on their Bandcamp page.
It’s 13 minutes of stripped down garage pop perfection sung en espanol. Recommended for fans of Davila 666 and Allah Las.
