Artist Alex Ross has made a name for himself as an award-winning interpreter of superheroes depicted in a painterly, realistic style. From DC Comics’ Justice League to Marvel’s Secret Wars and dozens of other comics from numerous publishers over the years, Ross’ work is so definitive and recognizable that after winning the Comic Buyers Guide Award for Favorite Painter several years in a row, they retired the category.

He also happens to be a big music fan, and a recent project included creating some “realistic” artwork based off the Beatles‘ animated film, Yellow Submarine.  So it was not surprising that he picked a Beatles song as one of his picks for his Guest DJ Session, which just posted this week.  What I did not necessarily expect was that, while he cited the Beatles as an all-time favorite, he also selected TWO Queen songs (which you could argue are actually THREE songs, as “We Will Rock You” & “We Are the Champions” segue into each other).  But his reasons for including both tracks are interesting & understandable, and you can hear them yourselves, as well as all the other guest selections, at kcrw.com/guestdjproject!
